I’ve stopped in the Desert Road, in the North Island of New Zealand to Paint Mt Ruapehu and the uplifted plateau. A week later, nearby Mt Tongariro erupted! (November 2012)
Mt Ruapehu is the stuff of Maori legend, eruption and lahar causing death, great walks, climbing, skiing and The Chateau to stay at. In a desolate region, it has fascinated me since I was a child. I watched nearby Mt Ngaruahoe erupt in the 90’s while sinking down on my crutches into snow. (I was in a cast).Wikipedia has this about it:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Ruapehu
The shelter belts have several cuts – along and low down, along and up high, and then across the top. The trees scream and screech as they’re being trimmed.
